When you take your car into your auto shop for service, does it sound like your auto mechanic is talking in a different language? If you need an interpreter to help you better discuss and understand what kind of auto repair services your mechanic is discussing with you, here is a shortlist of the most common auto repair services that you should know about:

  • “Oil Change and Replace Filter” – It is crucial that you know the oil change interval recommended for your vehicle, along with knowing what kind of oil to use. Remember to replace the filter at the same time. The oil filter cleans the engine oil while it circulates through the car’s lubrication system, vital for the performance of your car.
  • “Distributor” The distributor is a component of your car’s ignition system that delivers the right amount of electrical voltage to each spark plug at the right time. If you are having starting problems, this could be the culprit. However, your mechanic should also check how strong (or weak) the battery is if the alternator is working properly, and if the spark plugs are in good condition.
  • “Brake fluid” – This is one of your vehicle’s most important fluids and is found in the hydraulic brake system. This fluid helps squeeze the brake pads around the rotors, slowing and/or stopping your car as you step on the brake pedal.
  • “Radiator” – This is part of your vehicle’s cooling system and should have the right mixture of coolant/antifreeze and water. This mixture cools the motor as it circulates through the motor, returning to the radiator to be cooled off again.
  • “Tune-up” – A tune up can also be referred to as the “maintenance service schedule” referenced in your owner’s manual. A tune up has valuable benefits—your vehicle will start easier, run smoother with more power, increased fuel efficiency, and have cleaner emissions.

To ensure that your vehicle keeps giving you good service for many miles, remember that the various operating systems, components, and fluids require frequent checkups and maintenance. Be sure to ask questions if your auto mechanic starts to talk about auto repair services that you don’t understand.
