Expert Car Care Inc.

Avoid being stranded in unfortunate situations this summer by making sure you know when your car battery needs to be replaced. You might not have a working battery light on your dashboard to show you related problems, so how do you know when your car battery needs to be replaced? You can use multiple sure signs, such as checking the battery lifespan, to make a valid decision.

  • First, Check the Battery Lifespan:  If you have used your car battery for three to five years, or more, then it's time to replace it. Factors like time, the environment you live in, and rates of vibration can reduce its lifespan, so if your car is within this range, be sure to assess its current voltage level. A voltage level below 12.6 shows that it needs a replacement.
  • Your Headlights Dim When Idling:  Your battery may not be holding enough charge if your headlights dim while idling and become bright when you accelerate. To avoid possible complications as you commute or when you need your vehicle purchase a new battery.
  • The Vehicle Needs Frequent Jump-Starting:  A healthy battery should hold enough charge and start right away without the need to jump. Otherwise, your battery is failing, and it may be a sign that you need a new battery.
  • A Flicker of Your Dashboard Lights:  The battery supplies energy to all your vehicle's electrical components, so flickering on your dashboard may imply a failing battery. Check out your car's electrical connections first to be sure that your battery is the problem.
  • A Bulging Battery Case:  This means the inside cells might be swollen and more likely to rupture thereby causing a fire hazard and battery damage. Always check your battery regularly to avoid potential hazards and commuting disappointments.
  • A Bad Smell That Comes From Your Battery:  An old battery emits sulfuric acid as its cells start to die which triggers a bad smell. The smell can be hazardous or damaging to the surrounding parts of your car, so consider buying a new battery before the smell gets worse.

In case you are experiencing any of these issues, do an urgent battery testing and replacement. This may save you from further damage, disappointments, and potential vehicle hazards.
