Among the many items on your vehicle's maintenance checklist, are the often-forgotten car struts and shocks. Most car owner's know when to change the oil, and are attentive to their brakes, but question remains; how many miles do shocks last?

The answer to that question is based on many variables. Car struts and Shocks longevity depends on several factors such as how many miles a car is driven, how the car is driven, and what kind of roads are driven on. While the variables make a generic estimate impossible, you can expect your shocks and struts to last about 4 or 5 years. If your car has been subjected to extreme use, then the time frame would be shortened.

When trying to decide on how many miles do shocks last, it is helpful to keep in mind that even if you don't know when the shocks were last serviced, there are some signs you can look for to determine if they need replaced. For example, if you suspect that the shocks are bad, ask your mechanic to inspect them for wear, damage, and leaking of fluid.

You can test them yourself if you suspect the shocks are starting to fail. They have only one job, and that is to keep the car from bouncing. Push down on the corner of a bumper of your car. It should bounce once, then come immediately to resting height. Even if you don't know how many miles shocks last, this little test can give you a good idea if they need replacement or not. Another good rule of thumb is to have your mechanic inspect the shocks every 40,000 to 50,000 miles.
