Expert Car Care Inc.

Do you know why it’s important that your car has the correct wheel alignment? The correct alignment will make sure that your car maintains a good grip and traction on the road (especially in wet conditions); the tread on your tires will wear evenly and equally all around, and your tires have been adjusted to make sure they are moving together at the same speed and direction.

So how often should car alignment be done? Most mechanics would recommend that you have your wheel alignment checked about every three months. The benefits of an alignment service are:

  • Your tires will last longer,
  • You will notice an increase in your fuel economy,
  • There is less chance of damage to the shocks or struts, and
  • Your ride will be smooth and comfortable.

There are several issues that can cause misalignment problems, such as:

  1. Travel consistently on bad roads. Hitting a pothole or a curb, going too fast over a speed bump, or consistently driving on bumpy gravel roads can cause your vehicle to lose its alignment.
  2. Worn out suspension. If your shocks or struts become loose or worn due to misalignment problems, your car will be harder to keep going straight down the road.
  3. After-market modifications. If you’ve made modifications to your vehicle, such as lifting the height or adjusting the suspension, a wheel alignment should be done to make sure everything is moving together in the same direction.
  4. Accident. Even a minor fender-bender can throw off the wheel alignment.

A word of advice: Walk around your vehicle (at least every few days) to check the condition of your tires. If the tread is wearing unevenly or if the rubber is looking worn and you feel problems in the steering and control of your vehicle, have your car alignment checked and adjusted as soon as possible.
