Have you heard that today’s vehicles don’t need a tune up? In today’s vehicles with their advanced technology, an auto tune up is considered a form of preventative maintenance to ensure that your vehicle will continue to operate as well as possible as well as extend its lifespan. But just how often should you get a tune up on your car? And next, you may be wondering if there are any signs that it’s time for an auto tune up.

Look for these signs of a needed tune up:

  • Check engine light comes on.
  • Engine stalls when you try to accelerate.
  • Decrease in fuel economy.
  • Brakes don’t function as well as they should.
  • May be hard to shift gears, or feel jerking or slipping when shifting.
  • The steering wheel and seat vibrate excessively.

Here is a shortlist of the main issues covered in an auto tune up for today’s modern vehicles:

  • Air filter replaced. Replace the air filter about every year. Otherwise, if it gets clogged, the engine won’t be getting as much air as it needs to run properly. You will start to feel a decrease in your vehicle’s power and performance.
  • Fuel System inspected and components replaced as needed. A visual inspection should be made of the engine’s fuel-system components to ensure that the fuel filter and fuel injectors are clean and that the fuel pump is working properly. The inspection should also include spark plugs, PCV value, ignition timing, air filter, oxygen sensor, distributor cap, and oil and coolant levels.
  • Other operating systems inspected. Some operating systems, such as the brakes, suspension, air conditioning, and transmission are not typically included in a basic auto tune up, but it’s a good time to check them out and make any adjustments or repairs as needed.

If you are wondering how often should you get a tune up on your car, be sure to read your owner’s service manual. The tune up schedule can vary depending on the recommendation of your vehicle’s manufacturer. Typically, an older vehicle with a non-electronic ignition should have a tune up about every 10,000-12,000 miles, or once a year. The newer cars with electronic ignition and fuel injection can go from 25,000 to 100,000 miles before needing a major tune up.
