Automotive shocks and struts (whichever one your vehicle has) will wear out over time just like all the other systems and parts of your vehicle. However, because there is not a set time or mileage interval for replacing these parts of the suspension system, have them inspected regularly. It is hard to know exactly how fast they could be wearing out.

Here are a couple of situations that can cause automotive shocks and struts to wear out faster than usual:

  1. Road Conditions: Bumpy streets filled with potholes, rock, or other obstacles.
  2. Driving habits: Braking and accelerating hard and fast adds stress to the suspension system.

So what are the symptoms of bad struts? If you are experiencing any one or more of the following problems while driving:

  • Your car is hard to steer.
  • Your car sways back and forth when changing lanes or going around corners.
  • Your car bounces excessively after hitting a bump.
  • You notice tire “cupping” (rubber wearing off the tire).
  • It takes longer and further to come to a complete stop.
  • Your car's “nose dives” when braking.
  • Hydraulic fluid is leaking.

If there comes a time when you need to replace your automotive shocks or struts, don’t put it off, even though it may be a bit costly. You will see improvement in braking performance, gain better control of your vehicle, and prevent damage to other components of the suspension system, making your vehicle much safer to drive down the road.
